Preserving Latvian Textile Traditions
Variinc SIA connects traditional craft knowledge with modern learners. We're dedicated to keeping cimdu raksti patterns alive while making them accessible to everyone interested in Latvian textile heritage.
How We Started
Variinc SIA was founded on a simple belief: traditional Latvian textile crafts shouldn't disappear. We've built something real around preserving what makes Baltic heritage unique.
Started with a small group of knitting enthusiasts in Sigulda. We realized how few people understood the symbolism behind cimdu raksti patterns — those intricate designs tell stories passed down through generations.
Expanded workshops to Cēsis. Partnered with local wool producers to source authentic materials. We're talking real Latvian wool — not imports. Each project connects learners directly to the land.
Developed our beginner curriculum. Over 150 people completed their first knitting project. But more importantly, they learned why these patterns matter. That's when we knew we'd built something meaningful.
Launched crochet basics program and expanded educational content. We're now training workshop facilitators to spread this knowledge. variinc SIA isn't just teaching craft — we're building a community around heritage.
The Meaning Behind Cimdu Raksti
Latvian mitten patterns aren't decorative choices — they're a visual language. Every diamond, star, and geometric symbol carries meaning rooted in Baltic culture and history. We help people read that language through hands-on learning with local wool.
What Guides Our Work
We're not running a typical craft business. Everything we do is built on a foundation of respect for tradition, hands-on learning, and genuine community connection.
Educational Foundation
We teach the story behind each pattern. When you understand why cimdu raksti look the way they do, the needlework becomes more meaningful. That's not just craft — that's cultural literacy.
Local Wool First
We partner with Latvian wool producers because the material matters. Traditional mittens were made from local sheep's wool for durability and warmth. We've maintained that standard.
Community-Centered
Workshops in Sigulda and Cēsis aren't lecture halls. They're spaces where people connect with each other while learning. That's where the real magic of preserving heritage happens.
Textile Heritage Workshops
Variinc SIA runs hands-on programs in two locations. Whether you're completely new to knitting or ready to tackle complex cimdu raksti patterns, we've designed beginner projects and advanced workshops that meet people where they are.
Sigulda Workshop
Our original location offers beginner knitting basics and foundational crochet. We focus on building confidence with local wool before advancing to pattern work. Sessions run twice weekly with flexible scheduling.
Cēsis Workshop
This location specializes in cimdu raksti pattern study and advanced projects. We dive deep into symbolism and traditional techniques here. Perfect for learners ready to create their own mittens with authentic Latvian designs.
"Every mitten pattern tells a story. We're here to make sure those stories don't get lost. When you learn cimdu raksti, you're not just knitting — you're connecting with centuries of Latvian culture."
